Charging with children in the car is a different problem from charging alone. Twenty minutes at a lit service area with a restaurant and clean restrooms is a break; twenty minutes at an unlit lot behind a retail park is something you endure. Stops with people around, by design
Every charging stop Drive Charge Eat plans is a real place — a motorway service area, a truck stop, a site with a restaurant — not a row of chargers in an empty corner. This is a filter applied before scoring, not a preference that a faster charger can override, because a stop you would not get out of the car at is not a usable stop.
Restrooms and food, checked at the stop
The app looks for what is actually at each candidate stop and shows it: the restaurants there, how far they are on foot, and whether they are open at the time you would arrive. A place that is closed when you get there is hidden rather than listed, which is the difference between a plan and a guess when you are travelling with children.
The right side of the motorway
Paired motorway service areas — the ones with an eastbound and a westbound half a few hundred metres apart as the crow flies but unreachable from each other — are kept strictly separate, and the stop you are sent to is the one on your carriageway. Getting this wrong means a long detour with tired passengers, so the rule is enforced in the data, not left to chance.
Food the children will actually eat
You choose the restaurant chains your family will stop for, and those come first when stops are ranked. The point is not to advertise a brand: it is that a stop nobody wants to eat at becomes a stop everyone rushes, and rushing a charge is how you end up short of range on the next leg.
Driving after dark
At night the same rule does the most work: the app is choosing between a charger at a staffed, lit service area and one in an empty lot, and it takes the first. Verify what you find when you arrive — conditions change, and no app can see the site as you can — but the shortlist you are choosing from is built for stopping, not just for charging.
